This Is Not My Hat by Jon Klassen
Another fairly surreal semi-morality tale from Jon Klassen, in a kind of but not quite sequel to I Want My Hat Back. This time, a small fish steals a hat from a large fish while he’s sleeping. The small fish knows he’s not supposed to, but he does it anyway. He thinks he won’t get caught and he’ll be able to hide. But he does get caught and (probably) eaten. And the big fish gets his hat back.
We all loved this one. The slightly surreal nature of the story is a big hit with the girls, making it ‘funny’. I love the art, especially the black background of the deep dark sea. The underwater plants are beautiful. And I love the endpapers. I’m sure not everyone notices this detail, but I really appreciate it when a book has beautiful endpapers – and picture books in particular lend themselves to this.
Dramatic interpretation
The girls thought it would be rather fun to act out the book. So, here’s their dramatic interpretation of This Is Not My Hat:
